Activiteitenprogramma
De lezingen en presentaties door buitenlandse gastsprekers worden in het Engels gegeven, anders zijn alle activiteiten in het Nederlands. Alle activiteiten van Gemak zijn gratis. Aanmelding is niet verplicht tenzij anders aangegeven, maar als u zeker wilt zijn een stoel te vinden kunt u reserveren op 070 363 8968 en dan vijf minuten voor aanvang uiterlijk komen.
Voor en na afloop kan er aan de Gemak bar geborreld worden.

Lectures and presentations given by non-Dutch speakers are given in English; only when all participants in a given activity speak Dutch will proceedings be held in this language. Decolonizing Architecture
Lezing van Dr. Yazid Anani
Birzeit Universiteit, Palestina
Decolonizing Architecture wordt door middel van een multimedia installatie gepresenteerd in de tentoonstelling ‘Niemandsland?' Dit is een revolutionair onderzoeksprogramma, waarbij Palestijnse en internationale architecten, planners en sociale wetenschappers samen met Palestijnse buurtgemeenschappen bestuderen hoe naburige Israeli settlements in Palestina gebruikt kunnen worden door de lokale bevolking, als ze ooit ontruimd worden.
Een dag na de opening van de tentoonstelling zal Dr. Yazid Anani, een van de medewerkers van dit project, een presentatie geven van de onderliggende politieke filosofie van het concept, en zijn sociaal-culturele context.

Decolonizing Architecture

Birzeit University , Palestine
A multimedia installation in the exhibition ‘No Man's Land?' depicts the results of the project ‘Decolonizing Architecture'. This is a multidisciplinary and wide-scale research program, where Palestinian and international architects, planners and social scientists study, together with Palestinian local communities, different approaches to reuse of neighbouring Israeli settlements after their evacuation.
One day after the opening of the exhibition Dr. Yazid Anani, researcher at Palestine 's Birzeit University and one of the main participants in this project, will reveal the underlying political philosophy and explicate the social-cultural context of this project.

De Palestijnse bevolking wordt in het Westen en Israel meestal afgeschilderd als agrarisch en vrij primitief. Dit maakt de Israëli bezetting van het Palestijns grondgebied makkelijker te rechtvaardigen, vanuit een haast koloniaal perspectief. Als gevolg wordt de Palestijnse stedelijke cultuur verwaarloosd of vernietigd door de bezetter, die schermt achter militairstrategische of ontwikkelingsargumenten. Palestijnse wetenschappers mobiliseren zich hiertegen, met de hulp van organisaties zoals het Cultural Emergency Response (CER) van het Prins Claus Fonds.

The native population of Palestine is usually portrayed in Israel and the West as agrarian and fairly primitive. This facilitates the moral case for the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory, from an almost colonial perspective. The result is the voluntary neglect or destruction of Palestinian urban culture, hiding behind arguments of a military/strategic or developmental nature. Palestinian intellectuals are mounting increasing resistance against this trend, with the help of organizations such as Prince Claus Fund's Cultural Emergency Response (CER).

Deze lezing gaat over de huidige politieke situatie in de bezette Palestijnse gebieden, maar belicht vooral de actuele interne verdeeldheid van de Palestijnen. Khaled Hroub is een van 's werelds grootste deskundigen op het gebied van de bezette Palestijnse gebieden, en specifiek van Hamas. Hij is directeur van het Cambridge Arab Media Project en schreef onder anderen ‘Hamas: A Beginners Guide' (Pluto Press, 2006). Momenteel verblijft Khaled Hroub op de West Bank om les te geven binnen een zomerprogramma van Birzeit University, in Palestina.

This lecture is about the current political situation in the occupied Palestinian territories, and focuses on the internal divisions among Palestinians. Khaled Hroub is one of the world's principal experts on the occupied Palestinian territories, specifically of Hamas. Among his other publications is ‘Hamas: A Beginners Guide' (Pluto Press, 2006). Hroub is director of the Cambridge Arab Media Project and is currently resident professor at a summer course of Birzeit University , in Palestine .

Jeruzalem seminar
Besloten professionele bijeenkomst
In samenwerking met het International Institute for the Study of the Islam in the Modern World (ISIM), United Civilians for Peace (UCP) en het Nederlands Architectuur Instituut (NAI)
Palestijnse, Israëli en Nederlandse wetenschappers, stedenbouwkundigen en activisten komen bijeen om het alledaagse Jeruzalem te bespreken. Ver van de ideologische kreten die elkaar gewoonlijk proberen te overstemmen als het gaat over deze stad, bestuderen de deelnemers het dagelijkse leven van de stedelingen en de lessen die daaruit getrokken kunnen worden. Daarbij is het vertrekpunt een analyse van de gemeenschappen die dit terrein delen en wat dit zegt over bredere sociale trends waarmee zij zich verhouden; maar ook wordt er gekeken naar het effect van de steun van Nederlandse organisaties aan lokale partners.

Professional gathering
In cooperation with the International Institute for the Study of the Islam in the Modern World (ISIM), United Civilians for Peace (UCP) and the Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAI)
In this seminar Palestinian, Israeli & Dutch scholars, urban planners and activists will discuss 'ordinary Jerusalem '. Far away from the high-flying ideological discourses which usually clash around this city, we look at the daily life of its citizens and what we can learn from it, not only about the communities that intermingle in that city and their relation to broader social trends, but also about how Dutch involvement polarizes the situation on the ground.
